Question:

Who was Thomas Paine and what was his major influence on US history?

Sarah C.
Answer:

Thomas Paine is an Enlightenment writer who, by writing to the common people, spread ideas that eventually inspired the American Revolution in his popular pamphlet Common Sense and the French Revolution in his The Rights of Man for the Benefit of All Mankind and The Age of Reason. Produced on a large scale, his Common Sense pamphlet brought to light grievances that the American people had with King George III of England in 1776 and that the French had with Louis XVI in 1789, Paine’s colloquial style inspired Thomas Jefferson’s The Declaration of Independence that included 27 grievances against the king, John-Paul Marat’s writings in French newspapers, and Emmanuel Joseph Sieyés’ What is the Third Estate?. Thomas Paine’s ability to express his ideas in a way all people could understand allowed for the spread of Enlightenment ideas to inspire a desire for change and cultivated a reassurance that others also felt oppressed by the government. By writing for the common people and producing over 120,000 copies of the idea that the Americans and the French had placed their country in the hands of a geographically distant and out-of-touch ruler quickly spread, which eventually led to the American and French Revolutions.

Question:

How do I properly use a semicolon in my writing?

Sarah C.
Answer:

There is one way to use a semicolon that can be helpful to you as a writer and to your reader. Semicolons are used as an add-on to an already complete sentence. The words that follow a semicolon are always a complete sentence. They are extremely short, to the point, and are used a clarification for your already complete sentence. These sentences can sometimes be called VSSs or very short sentences. One example is "The dog went merrily around the bend and came to a complete halt; his ball was in the bush." Here, the VSS at the end after the semicolon explains the first complete sentence and gives a full picture of what action occurred. As a writer, semicolons are used to clarify details in writing in a succinct way.

Question:

Equation: x/12 =12/144. Solve for x.

Sarah C.
Answer:

There are two different ways to solve this equation depending on how you see the problem. One way is to reduce the fraction on the right side to make the equation easier to solve. The way you would do this is by finding a common factor for both numbers 12 and 144. The common factor would be 12. So, you would divide each number by 12 to get 1/12. This simplifies the equation to x/12 = 1/12. Therefore, you can say that x = 1 since 1/12 and 1/12 are equivalent. Another way to solve this is by cross-multiplying. Each equation is set equal to each other. Therefore, you can multiply the two 12's and x by 144. Since 12 times 12 equals 144 and 144 times x is 144, the new equation is 144 = x144. Therefore, x must equal 1. As always, you would go back in and plug in 1 as your answer to double-check.
