What is the role of institutions in society?
The role of institutions in society are two-fold. Firstly, institutions provide structure and access for individuals within society. The structure comes from the fact that there are systems in place for certain needs that are inherent to society (i.e. system for the need of healthcare, system for the need of car insurance, etc.). It is through the systems that individuals can access ways of fulfilling their needs. Secondly, institutions, at least in America, are used to pour capital into the economy. Many institutions in America are businesses that provide profits and jobs.
Why do we dream and do our dreams have any significance in terms of insights into ourselves?
The answer to this two part question depends on psychological school of thought one follows. According to Neuropsychology, dreams are simply the firing of neurons in our brains while we sleep. Some dreams feel real and relevant to our lives because neurological pathways we use while awake are often times used while we sleep as well. However, there are other ways of looking at dreams. For example, according to psychoanalysis, dreams are products of the unconscious. What we see in our dreams is the psyches attempt to bring unconscious conflicts into our conscious minds. Because of this, dreams have immense meaning for the psychoanalytic school of thought.
