What are the difference between an executive order, an executive agreement, and an executive privilege?
An Executive Order is a rule or regulation issued by the President that has the effect and formal status of legislation. An Executive Agreement is an agreement, made between the President and another country, that has the force of a treaty but does not require the Senate's consent. An Executive Privilege is a claim that confidential communications between the President and close advisers should not be revealed without the consent of the President when it comes to national security issues.
What were some of the long-reaching consequences of the French Revolution?
A consequence of the French Revolution is that the people who started the Revolution created the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizens, which holds that every man is born free and equal in rights and they have "natural rights" that can't be alienated. This unintentionally resulted in the revolution of the French Colony of Haiti by its majority black inhabitants (led by Toussaint Loverture) who has been held down by a system of slavery on the island. Another long reaching consequence is that after the French overthrew the monarchy of Louis XIV and led to a power struggle which ended with the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. Not only he had a tight control over France but he led an invasion throughout Europe, which he also specifically got rid of the Spanish and Portuguese monarchies and resulted in them in exile in Latin America. Especially in the Spanish colonies, the arrival of the King and the Penisulares (Spanish born colonial elites) interfered with the power of the Criollos (mixed Spanish-Native American elites) which resulted in revolutions throughout Latin America. Even in Egypt when Napoleon invaded there, he weakened the Mamluks (slave soldiers in Egypt owned by the Ottomans) which resulted in the rise of Albanian Muhammad Ali Pasha who led a failed revolt in Egypt against the Ottomans. Another long-reaching consequences of the French Revolution are that it started the idea of nationalism where people of the same ethnicity can be united and pledge loyalty to a nation-state, not a monarchy which leads to people like Otto Von Bismarck uniting Germany and places like Serbia and Greece rebelling against the Ottoman Empire.
Can you list and shortly describe three programs or laws FDR got through with the New Deal?
One program Franklin Delano Roosevelt got through with the New Deal is the Social Security Act of 1935 in which we still use today. The Act allows U.S. Citizens to receive welfare from the government after they are retired or are disabled. Another program that Franklin Delano Roosevelt implemented with the New Deal is the Glass-Steagall Act which separated commercial banking from investment banking. With the Act, the banks were no longer allowed to take people's money from their bank account and use it to buy stocks in the stock market and make big risks with people's money which is one of the reasons why the Great Depression happened. Another program that President FDR got through is the Tennessee Valley Authority. The Tennessee Valley Authority provided infrastructure jobs like making dams to the Tennessee Valley and was supposed to improve living standards for farmers by giving them hydroelectric power.
