Question:

The production cost, in dollars, per day of producing x number of books is given by C (x) = 1750 + 6x - 0.04x^2 + 0.0003x^3. What is the marginal cost when x = 99.

Adaugo A.
Answer:

Marginal cost is simply the derivative of the cost function, and so marginal cost will be determined by this equation - C^1 (x) = 0 + 6 (x^1-1) - 2 (0.04)x^2-1 + 3 (0.0003)x^3-1 Therefore C^1 (x) = 6 - 0.08x + 0.0009x^2 Marginal cost when x is 99 = C^1 (99) = 6 - 0.08 (99) + 0.0009 (99)^2 Marginal cost for 99 books is $6.90, which means it will cost approximately $6.90 to produce the 100th book.

Question:

Why would a patient with Type 1 diabetes mellitus, fail on oral sulfonylurea (anti-diabetic) therapy?

Adaugo A.
Answer:

Putting a patient with Type 1 DM on oral sulfonylurea will not work for the patient because, this class of drugs works by binding to ATP dependent potassium channels on beta cells which block potassium efflux from the cell, and the build-up of potassium plus calcium influx causes depolarization leading to insulin release. On the other hand, T1DM is caused by a total destruction of beta cells (an autoimmune disease), and so these drugs can never work for a T1DM patient since they act on beta cells.
