Why do we begin academic essays with a unique thesis statement?
The purpose of academic writing is to produce new ideas, so when we write essays we strive to express ideas that are unique. We begin essays with the thesis statement so that our reader understands our main point right away. That way they have this in mind as they read the rest of the essay, which should thoroughly prove our thesis.
Why is the process of constitution-building so important for nations emerging from conflict situations?
In post-conflict situations, the constitution-building process allows the nation to establish new rules that can prevent conflict from breaking out in the future and create a more sustainably peaceful society. Particularly successful constitution-building processes involve people from many different areas of society and intentionally include historically repressed groups, such as women and ethnic minorities. Tunisia's recent constitution-building process is an example.
What are the greatest barriers to peace in our current world? What are some practical steps we can take towards overcoming those barriers?
The greatest barriers to peace on our planet right now are a scarcity of resources, long-standing historical rivalries, and ingrained emotional patterns of hatred and violence. We must find sound methods for sharing the resources of this planet in fair ways. This will involve transforming our economic and political systems to reflect our globalized world. Ultimately it may require a political system that fully supersedes nation-states. We must also heal the emotional wounds that create patterns of violence and hatred. This will have to involve widespread public service campaigns focused on emotional health, cross-cultural collaboration and restorative justice.
