What is the most important topic in music theory for musicians?

The most important thing I teach all of my students at a very early age is the circle of fifths. While the circle of fifths itself can be confusing to a young student; the content it delivers is of the utmost importance. All music is based on scales and keys (even those modern pieces that veer away from a key center can find the scales periodically!). When you know and understand the scales and key centers it opens doors to amazing music and discovery.

What are some of the most important aspects of learning music?

When learning a musical instrument, reading music, or music history, the most important aspect is your love for the medium. Choose your instrument to be the vehicle to share your emotions and passions with others. Reading music is such an international language...the title may change in various countries but the music itself speaks loudly. Music represents emotion, passion, hard work, history, and a story. I enjoy taking students through the stories and to find themselves in the amazing work that is music.

What is the best method for learning a second Language?

Answer:

When I originally wanted to learn a second language the fastest and most effective way this happened was through immersion. I dedicated six weeks to an immersion program where we only spoke French for the entire time and learned very quickly. When I am teaching others to speak English I feel the best way is to stay in the English language. We will change speech in order to ensure understanding, use props, pictures, and gestures to explain but we will remain in the English language. As understanding continues the speed of speech increases, the vocabulary expands, and the inflections and slang are present.
