Question:

What is the complement and supplement of 25 degrees?

Inactive
Talya L.

First we must ask ourselves, what does complement and supplement mean? Complement means the angles add up to 90 degrees and the supplement means the angles add up to 180 degrees. Knowing this, the complement, lets call it x, of 25 degrees can be found by creating an equation 25 + x = 90. Subtracting 25 from 90 we get x = 65 thus the complement of 25 degrees is 65 degrees. To find the supplement of 25 degrees we do something similar. We can say 25 + x = 180 where x is the supplement. Subtracting 25 from 180 we get 155, thus the supplement of 25 degrees is 155 degrees,

Question:

If Joe orders a large cheese pizza (8 slices) to share among him and his three friends equally, what fraction of the pizza does each person get? How many slices does each person get?

If we draw a circle (shape of a pizza) and cut it into 4, since there are 4 people sharing the pizza, each person would get 1/4 of the circle. Since there are a total of 8 slices, we divide 8 slices by 4 people to get 2 slices per person. In other words, each person will get 2/8 of the pizza pie which is equal to 1/4 when reduced.

Question:

Professional skydivers jump out of a plane at a height h, which is represented by the equation h = -20t^2+1200. In this equation, h is the height in feet and t is the time in second from a height of 1200 feet. If the sky divers parachute opens up at 800 feet, how long will the professional skydivers experience free fall?

Since we know the parachute opens up at 800 feet then we can say h = 800 feet. Plugging 800 feet into the equation we get 800 = -20t^2 + 1200. Then isolating the t^2 term we get -400 = -20t^2. Dividing through by -20 to get t^2 by itself we get 20 = t^2. Then we take the square root of 20, in order to get t. By taking the square root, one must remember that we receive both a positive and negative number, we receive approximately 4.47 seconds and -4.47 seconds. Since time is not negative, we neglect the negative answer, our answer is 4.47 seconds.
