So learning more than just the basics, why is continuing learning a new language so significant?
Language and grammar are like a beautiful poem all fitting together to create a great song. By knowing the tips and tricks to make this poem flow smoothly, vous serez en route pour une grande experience!
What is the significance of learning another language, even the basics?
As Nelson Mandela once said, "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart." Communication is the key to acceptance and love. If we want to come together, we must learn to first communicate. By attempting to learn a new language, comme le français, we are attempting to bridge the gap and bring the whole closer together, one word at a time.
We are all told that we should or should not speak certain way or use certain words, ex. I ain't gonna do nothin'. This is just improper grammar! But what if I told you that a sentence like this is 100% correct? How is this is?
As linguists, there are many different ways at looking at grammar. The mental grammar that a native speaker possesses allows us to create and understand an infinite amount of novelty sentences. Prescriptive linguists would tell you that the sentence above is incorrect-- they refer to what you should or ought to say and what is socially acceptable; whereas, descriptive linguists teach us that if a sentence is used by native speakers, it is just as correct as a "socially acceptable" sentence. Language is in the eye of the linguist.
