Question:

To what extent was European colonization in the Americas influenced by the Catholic-Protestant religious warfare in Europe?

Answer:

Iberian (Spanish and Portuguese) colonization had already begun before the Protestant Reformation and therefore predated the religious warfare. However, the religious conflict which began in the sixteenth century created an impetus for the now-Protestant Dutch and English to attack the Iberian overseas colonies and establish their own in order to counterbalance Catholic power.
