What hormones are secreted by the posterior pituitary gland and what are their functions?
The posterior pituitary gland secretes Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) and oxytocin. ADH functions in sodium and water balance in the body as well as maintenance of blood pressure. Oxytocin is involved in uterine contractions during childbirth and bonding.
Describe how a G-Protein Coupled Receptor (Gs) functions.
A ligand binds to the receptor of the 7-transmembrane protein. This causes the dissociation of the heterotrimeric G protein inside of the cell into the beta/gamma dimer and the alpha subunit bound to GTP. The activated alpha unit binds to adenylyl cyclase, causing an increased production of cyclic AMP (cAMP). cAMP binds to protein Kinase A, leading to stimulation of the cell.
What is the name the part of the nephron that performs ultrafiltration?
The Glomerulus. The Glomerulus is a tuft of capillaries that filters the blood, preventing proteins and red blood cells from passing through into the Bowman's capsule.
