What do some of the earliest examples of art history tell us about our artistic ancestors?
Whether the caves in Lascaux or the Venus of Willendorf, our artistic ancestors used expressed themselves in order to memorialize their existence. It is often argued that art is a leisure activity, those living in caves and hunting and gathering did not have time for such frivolity. However, from the earliest examples, it can be seen that artistic expression was a way of life. Documentation mattered, ritual mattered, belief in something larger mattered.
