What is the secret to having a good thesis for a college-level essay?
Writing a good thesis is both an art and a science. You have to be able to accurately describe and inform the reader about the scope of your writing and specific topics covered, but do so in a way that is not an overabundance of information. Focusing on a tight, simple thesis that lists the major points covered or explored in your essay as a whole is the secret to a strong start to any paper.
Does J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings count as a literary classic? Why or why not?
"Classics" are subjective, as is the nature of a literary canon. The Lord of the Rings is a significant body of work due to the breadth of influence it contains in pop culture, but revering it as literature has to do more with the question of what the individual considers literature. A poetry buff may not blink twice at the mention of middle earth, but someone who adores speculative fiction would see it as a pinnacle of the subgenre. Focus more on the works that have personal meaning to you, and not what can be considered "good" or "a classic" objectively.
What's the difference between a metaphor and an analogy?
A metaphor is a poetic way of describing something that truly refers to something else. An analogy is a direct comparison of something to another in a way of getting a point across. Think squares and rectangles - all analogies are metaphors, but not every metaphor is an analogy.
