What is the most important thing to remember when crafting written communication?
It is important to focus on using clear and concise language. Verbose sentences and grandiose vocabulary illustrate the difference between knowledge and wisdom. The more compounded a sentence is, the greater its chance of being misunderstood is. Worse yet, it may be forgotten or skipped over all together. By crafting clear sentences in plain language, we communicate rather than create art for art's sake.

What makes the difference between the foreign policy of Jimmy Carter and Reagan, which dramatically shifted the course of US involvement in foreign conflicts?
The difference is in terminology. Jimmy Carter focused on "human rights", whereas the Reagan adminstration focused on "democracy". This change in language had a significant impact in refocusing the conflicts on dichotomous Cold War terms as opposed to a more accurate post colonial context which those involved may have been experiencing. This allowed the US to partner with regimes that were brutally oppressive but anti communist.
