What should a student do after compiling all of their research for an upcoming research paper or essay?
You have already put in a lot of time and energy in compiling research on your paper topic. This information is going to be useful, but you must next compare and contrast the knowledge and insights gained from your research. This is the "clustering" part of your writing process. Take the time to group insights and facts from your different sources that are alike. This will allow you to start thinking about your thesis and your major points in your outline.

What are some methods one can do if reading retention does not come easy to him or her?
Reading retention can be difficult when one is reading a challenging and new book. I recommend giving yourself more time to read the book/text a bit slower than your normal reading speed. Moving slower will allow you to engage the book by underlining important topical sentences. In addition, it will allow you to write notes and questions from the content that is being read that you will be able to return to later on. When we engage the book's content we are better able to make its contents fresh and memorable.
