Is globalization a modern phenomenon? Did it begin in the 1980s, the 18th century, or earlier?
Globalization, which is to say the growth of interconnectivity and interdependence between human populations across oceans and continents, is not a modern phenomenon. In some ways it has been occurring for millennia; however, even if we only consider the interconnectivity of the "whole" globe as true globalization, humans have engaged in political and economic interchange and discourse on a global or nearly global scale since at least the late 1400s CE. There were African Muslims, exploited by Portuguese European Christians, interacting and forming relationships with Indigenous Brazilians in the 1600s; those same Portuguese had colonies in Macau and Goa at the same time. Discourse that emphasize the globalization processes of the past two decades, or even two centuries, as somehow "different obscure the long roots of coloniality across the world.

Was Reconstruction a success or a failure?
Reconstruction permanently asserted Northern and Western industrial capitalist dominance over Southern agriculture, and was therefore a success for the federal government and the dominant classes. The defeated planter oligarchy, organized in the postwar Democratic Party, also ultimately did well for itself, precisely because Reconstruction was a democratic failure; a violent and illegal movement of repression against Black citizens destroyed reform, with the Republicans proving unworthy and unreliable allies to Black southerners.
