What causes the volcanic eruptions of Mt. St. Helen to be more explosive than those of Hawaii?
The magma composition of Mt. St. Helen is different than Hawaii's magma. Mt. St. Helen has felsic magma. This means that it is higher in silica and oxygen and lower in iron and magnesium. Felsic magma has a higher viscosity, or a higher resistance to flow. Due to this higher viscosity, it takes more pressure to cause a volcanic eruption. Hawaiian magma is mafic. This is the opposite of felsic and also has lower viscosity. Mafic magma flows more easily.
