What use does English have beyond school?
English is thought to be something that we only have to know to get through school, write our papers, and get on with our lives, but that could not be further from the truth. People use the skills they develop in English classes throughout their lives. Every time you write a note, a summary report, or even an email, you use those skills. How is learning European history relevant to Americans students and otherwise?
What very few people understand is that most of today's Americans descend from immigrants who moved to the United States at various times throughout history. By learning about European history, we learn about the histories of ourselves, our families, and our friends. Furthermore, it is well known that those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it. By knowing history beyond the borders of the United States, we absorb more knowledge that allows us to learn from the past and make better-informed decisions.
