Question:

What is the purpose of a cover letter when a resume is also attached in the application?

Inactive
Rebecca L.
Answer:

A cover letter contextualizes the experiences listed on the resume to the requirements of the individual job. For example, leadership in a club can be used to prove organizational skills needed to operate as a team manager. The cover letter also allows for applicants to explain their reasoning for applying to the specific job. In doing so, the applicant personalizes themselves during an interview process that is otherwise generic. Cover letters provide a holistic view of the applicant that extends beyond their resume.

Question:

Why is it inaccurate to blame the outbreak of World War I on the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand?

Answer:

Although the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand led to several negotiations in the Balkans, it was the development of alliances and militaries among all of Europe in the previous decades that resulted in the declaration of World War I. The Balkans had long been regarded as the Powder Keg of Europe because of the tumultuous political tension. As a result, the assassination of the Duke was not met with much surprise by those in the rest of Europe. What the majority of the European public did not know, though, was that nations were working themselves into alliances that would trigger war if one party came under attack. The Triple Entente, for example, banded together three of the most powerful nations into a military alliance. Germany, in its attempt to combat such an alliance that encircled the nation, began to invest in its military and navy. Both instances fed into growing political and military distrust among opposing nations. In addition, colonial wars in the latter half of the 19th century had led to a developing aggression of military tactics among many European nations that blurred the line between civilian and military targets. All of these situations, independently growing for decades in advance, triggered several mistakes and decisions that would ultimately lead to the outbreak of World War I. To pin it all on the death of a particularly unpopular Archduke ignores the mass militarization and political development of Europe prior to 1914.

Question:

Explain how the advent of oil paint impacted the development of art at the beginning of the Northern Renaissance period.

Answer:

In the 15th century, Northern European artists developed oil paint and subsequently revolutionized techniques when working on canvas. Oil paint does not dry, but rather oxidizes, and does so over a long period of time. As a result, artists had the ability to paint in fine detail, blend several colors at once, and paint over an extended time frame. This freedom and longevity allowed for artists interested in hyper realism to finally have the tools at their disposal that made detailed paintings possible. Prior to the invention of oil paint, artists used pigment mixed with egg whites, which dried quickly and limited their ability to mix paint and work slowly. Oil paint completely transformed the medium of painting as a means of documentation and decoration.
