## Questions

### Subject: Chemistry

What is the electron structure of Ne?

We assign electrons to orbitals from left to right on the periodic table. The first row has two atoms and the corresponding electrons will fit in the first s orbital, so we'll add 1s(2). We will examine the next row until we reach Ne. The alkali metals and alkaline earth metals each add one electron to the second s orbital, so in total we have 1s(2)2s(2). We now examine the non-metals in the second row. Each of these will add an electron to the p orbital. Since there are six elements, including Ne, in this row, we add a 2p(6). In total the electron structure of Ne is 1s(2)2s(2)2p(6).

### Subject: Calculus

What is the integral from -2 to 2 of 4sin(3x) with respect to x?

While we can use by parts to solve this equation, it is much faster to remember that sin is an odd function. Since the bounds are the same distance with respect to the x-axis, the answer is 0.

### Subject: Biological Engineering

A batch reactor containing anaerobic microorganisms is being analyzed for the efficiency of converting organic materials to methane. Heavy metals have been added to the mix in order to examine their effects on methane production. It was shown that adding more organic material had less if an increase in methane production in the presence of heavy metals. Why might this be the case?

Adding food into a live system will cause an increase in reproduction. The reproductive process of microorganisms increases their susceptibility to contaminants such as heavy metals.
