Question:

What roles do sex and gender play in mental health help-seeking?

Inactive
Nicole C.
Answer:

Due the stigma around male toughness, men are less likely than women to seek help for mental and physical health issues. Men who strongly confirm to traditional gender norms tend to hold more negative attitudes towards mental health help seeks and thus, steer away from regular doctor visits. Men are also far likely than women to bring up emotional or mental health problems during routine doctor visits, which can be an important first step toward getting help.

Question:

What can Tocqueville's writings about the penitentiary system teach us about the true essence of a successful democracy?

Inactive

Answer:

Tocqueville examines the American penitentiary system and its punitive measures through a critical lens which illuminates the imperfection in its delivery of promises for social equality, liberty, and justice. The critiques of the penal system juxtaposed with praise for the House of Refuge emphasizes that a true democracy is one that should serve to rehabilitate its citizens. Through religion and local organizations, we learn to respect one another as persons despite our flaws and all. In fact, we can acknowledge one’s flaws yet still understand that they are entitled to their full personhood and liberty. America is one example of an imperfect democracy: there are chances for redemption for some yet little to none for others.

Question:

How important are grades and standardized test scores when admissions decisions are being made?

Answer:

Colleges like to conduct holistic reviews for each student when deciding who to admit. Something I wish that I knew when applying to colleges is that a school will look at you in the context of your high school and hometown. Therefore, they are looking to see that you took advantage of the resources that you had and utilized them to the best of your ability. Grades and standardized test scores may get you through the front door but they are in no means the only factor looked at when deciding admissions.
