Questions

Subject: German

Question:

Is there a quick way to learn the genders of nouns in German?

Matthew R.
Answer:

Unfortunately no. While there may be some patterns in some places, the use of der, die, and das can not be predicted by any easy tool. The only sure fire way to learn the genders i by memorization. That being said the best way to do this is, unlike English where one just learns the word, try and study nouns with their article. For example instead of learning that Hund means dog, learn der Hund. If you build this habit early, the genders will just become a routine process in learning the language.

Answer:

In terms of everyday life, this field is so much more important than many Americans know. Nearly every aspect of ones life has to do with the structure of the nation America live in. From the food you eat for breakfast to a drive to the local store, the laws and regulations created by our government are present. By understanding this system, one can learn how much influence they have themselves over deciding how their world works. Of course this can be seen on a larger scale as well. Understanding the US government can help one not only know how our leaders operate, but can help them learn how to make informed and well educated decisions when voting and even interacting with ones community.

Why should you study European History?

Answer:

While there has been much controversy over Europe's impact on the history of the world, the fact of the matter is it cannot be ignored. Regardless of the positive or negative aspects of the long period of European domination over the various regions of the world, the world we live in is a direct response to both the acceptance and the rejection of this period. From roughly the late 15th century following Columbus's expedition, to the mid 20th century following WWII, European culture, technology, and ideas has influenced every region of the planet. This is why it is important to study European History. It is impossible to understand the modern era without learning the basic concepts and history of Europe.
