Question:

What is digital media? What role does it have in today's society?

Linh N.
Answer:

Interestingly, digital media is not at all graphic design. Digital media belongs to journalism, which elaborate issues surrounding the rise of digital consumption. One of the most significant debatable point surrounding digital media is social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and their policies on consumer's privacy and information protection. Another problem digital media touches on is the transition of the press from newspaper to online news feed. Digital media is important because almost everyone in the world has relied on the social network for to collect information, building connection, and promoting themselves. It is important for consumers to understand the potential of social media and the risks of facing the violation against their privacy caused by these online platforms and hackers.

Art History

Question:

Why is art history important? Why can we move on from the past and focus on contemporary art?

Linh N.
Answer:

There would be no such thing called contemporary if there was no classical art. The knowledge of the art history is fundamental to understand why we need art in the first place. To study art history is not to study only how art was formed but also how it transformed through time and become what we call contemporary, modern art. We cannot fully appreciate art until we have gained an insight of its rich history involving cultures, ideas, and political movements.

Illustrator

Question:

How is Illustration worse (or better) and hand-drawing? Why do we need graphic design when we have already had artists who can hand-draw very well and same subject matter?

Linh N.
Answer:

It is essential to understand that while design (particularly graphic design) and studio art both fall in the Art category, they are not the same thing. A person can be either an artist or a designer, but an artist does not equal a designer and vice versa. While both design and hand-made art produce mesmerizing results, there are more regulations in design than there are in studio art. Design exists everywhere in our everyday lives, and they are made mainly for business, marketing, commercial, sales, etc. Whereas, artists have more freedom to choose the medium of the artwork and the messages it conveys. Most artworks are to reflect social issues and provoke social changes. In short, an illustration in design is used for business while studio art contains political messages.
