Question:

Who brought American Sign Language to the United States?

Caitlynn B.
Answer:

Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet brought sign language to the United States from France in the late eighteenth century. This occurred because he met a deaf girl named Alice, who he thought was very smart and wanted to find a way to teach her better. He then established a school for the deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. The first and only deaf university in the United States is named after him, called Gallaudet University in Washington D.C.

Question:

What is the limit as x approached infinity of the equation (x^2-3X^4-2X+12)/(13-X^3-X^5)?

Caitlynn B.
Answer:

This is an ends based limit question. To solve one of these problems, when it is a fraction, works off the basis of infinity being such a large number. You cross out all values in the numerator but the largest one, which in this case is 3x^4. Then you do the same with the denominator, which is -1x^5. This leaves the limit as 3x^4/-1x^5. Then you simply so you wind up with 3/-x. Because there would be infinity in the denominator the limit would be very small, practically zero. Therefore the solution is 0.

Question:

Say you are taking a ten question test, where the answers are all blacked out. Each question has five answer options. What is the probability of having the first question you get correct be the tenth question?

Caitlynn B.
Answer:

To solve this you would have to use a geometric pdf, because you are determining what is the probability of having the first correct answer be at x= 10. The other value that is needed for this calculation is p, which represents the probability of getting the question right. p is 1/5 or .2. If you plug these numbers into the formula, or using a calculator, you will get .027. That means that there is a 2.7% chance that the first right answer will be on the last question of the test.
