What is a function?
A function is defined as a binary relation between two variables. In order for a relation to be considered a function, each input value of y must have exactly one output x value. If an inputed y value yields more than one value of x as its output, then the relation is NOT a function.

What are acids and bases?
To determine the acidity or alkalinity of any substance, we measure it on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 14. The closer it is to 0, the more acidic it is. The closer it is to 14, the more basic it is. Acids have a greater ability to donate protons (H+), while bases act as the proton acceptors. Acids and bases are able to react in reactions with each other, in which protons (H+) is exchanged between them.

What is an atom?
To put it simply, an atom is the most basic unit of a single element of matter. These units of matter are made up of subatomic particles (protons, neutrons, and electrons). Looking at the periodic table, we can see that a basic carbon has an atomic number of 6. This means that a basic carbon atom contains 6 protons and 6 neutrons in its nucleus. We can also conclude that a basic carbon atom has 6 electrons (2 in the inner shell, and 4 valence electrons).
