Answer:

Passive voice should almost always be replaced with active voice. It is acceptable to use passive voice when attempting to obscure the subject of an action.

Question:

What was the effect of the Industrial Revolution on British literature?

Answer:

During and shortly after the Industrial Revolution, the Romanticism and the Gothic dominated British literature. Romantics like William Wordsworth turned toward pastoral images of England to recover a period before before vast urbanization and industrialization, while William Blake sought to capture a more medieval worldview without Enlightenment rationalism. Gothic novels, like Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," dealt with gloomier topics like mortality to confront the new forms of life brought about by factories and technological advancement.

Question:

Name three characteristics of writing during the Harlem Renaissance?

Answer:

The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement of African American artists during the period between the two world wars. First, many authors of the period experimented with style, most notably for using African American vernacular, in departure from the style of the 19th century novel. Zora Hurston's novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God" is a crucial example. Second, Harlem Renaissance writers were deeply effected by jazz, blues, and Negro spirituals, reflected particularly in the writing of Langston Hughes. Third, there was an noticeably international cast on the movement; for instance, Hurston spent considerable time in Haiti doing anthropological work and Hughes lived much of his life in Paris.
