Question:

What is utilitarianism?

Abbi Y.
Answer:

Although there are many variations of utilitarianism and these variations can go very in depth, the general view holds that an action is considered to be morally right if and only if that action produces the most good. This theory is a form of consequentialism, or the belief that an action is morally right if the best consequence has been produced. On the utilitarian view, one ought to maximize overall good, or bring the greatest amount of good to the greatest number of people.

Question:

What is pathos and how does using it enhance a piece of writing?

Abbi Y.
Answer:

Pathos is an appeal to emotions. By using this appeal in your writing, you create an emotional response which helps to convince the audience to take your side in an argument. For example, if I tell someone to take a certain route home because the alternative route is in my opinion unsafe, I am appealing to my listener's emotions because they have an innate response to want to stay away from an unsafe situation. As a result, I have persuaded them to take the route I told them to take. Similarly, using this type of literary device in your writing will help strengthen the affect you have on your audience.
