Question:

Why are those with Atrial Fibrillation at a higher risk for strokes?

Inactive
Andee M.
Answer:

When a patient has atrial fibrillation, their heart does not contract efficiently, causing blood to pool or become stagnant in the atria of the heart. When blood is stagnant for any amount of times, this leads to clotting. The pooling blood, in the atria of the heart, can clot and be pumped out into the brain. If the clot reaches the brain, this can cause an ischemic stroke, by preventing oxygen rich blood from getting to the brain.
