Question:

How best to differentiate between the Dativ and the Akkusativ cases?

Victoria T.
Answer:

Dativ is for anything that isn't moving, while Akkusativ is for anything that is in motion. For example: Ich setzte das Buch auf DEN Tisch. (it's currrently being put onto the table) Das Buch liegt auf DEM Tisch. (the book is currently not moving on the table)

Question:

How important is grammar whilst learning English as a second language?

Victoria T.
Answer:

In my time, I have found that my students who focus more on pronunciation and vocabulary, improve faster than my students who focus on grammar. I am of the firm belief, that while grammar is important for understanding and for written English, the fastest way to learn English is to engage in as much conversation as possible and try not to worry about grammar too often. The grammar will come later once you have a stronger grasp on the spoken language.

Subject: US History

Question:

Is taking down or destroying monuments of confederate generals "destroying" history?

Victoria T.
Answer:

I believe that taking down monuments is a tricky thing to do because history is being altered. Monuments are an important way that we chose to remember historical people or events. It makes sense to change our social identity as we change as a society (society recognizing past mistakes and working to fix them) but it is very important to never forget the narrative of a monument. I believe it is best for monuments that do not reflect society any more to go into museums, as to remember how we once were without idolizing people or events that were determinedly wrong.
