Question:

List one example of how historical migration has had an effect on American industrialization.

Answer:

Chinese migration to West Coast in the late 19th century was crucial to two components of American industrialization: the construction of a transcontinental railroad and racial conflict within American labor movements. Chinese labor was crucial for the dangerous and demanding task of constructing the transcontinental railroad which would revolutionize American transportation networks, allowing American industry to further blossom into the 20th century. The construction of American railroads allowed for interconnectedness between the two American coasts, the rise of American corporations, and the growth of American manufacturing on both coasts. Introducing Chinese labor into the American economy also complicated racial relations within the American labor movement. A nativist movement grew to scapegoat Chinese laborers for white unemployment. At its worst, American nativism led to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the first and only immigration law to target a specific nationality.

Question:

Which word best communicates the intended meaning of this sentence: Report card in hand, Gertrude's face was painted with a ____ frown as she walked home to relay her final semester grades to her parents. a. melancholy b. dejected c. desolate d. regretfully

Answer:

b. dejected; Melancholy is also a synonym of "sad", but it is not as accurate as "dejected" in describing the disappointing and demoralizing feeling of getting bad grades for the semester. Melancholy better describes sadness from loss or another uncertain cause. Desolate is also a synonym of "sad", but it better describes sadness from loneliness or emptiness. Regretfully is an adverb and does not fit in this sentence structure.
