How does periodontal disease affects systemic health?
The dysbiosis in Periodontal Disease increases the number of gram negative anaerobe microorganisms which posses Lipopolysaccharide, an endotoxin. Due to entry of these microorganisms directly in the bloodstream via the microulcerations in the pocket lining brought about by the chronic inflammation, it causes bacteremia and because of the lipopolysaccharide it causes endothelial dysfunction, damage to the normal tissue and even coagulation which puts a person at risk of developing cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis.
Between Gram Positive and Gram Negative bacteria, which has a thicker cell wall?
Both gram positive and gram negative bacteria have a cell wall external to the cytoplasmic layer which is called peptidoglycan. Gram positive bacteria has a thicker cell wall or peptidoglycan layer, in addition to that, it also has teichoic acid.
What neuroglia is responsible for the formation of the gap junctions responsible for saltatory conduction in the Central Nervous System?
Oligodendrocytes. They primarily produce myelin sheath covering and insulating the axons. The gaps which are devoid of myelination are responsible for saltatory conduction which transmits signals much faster than fully myelinated axons.
