Question:

If a store fills bags of apples by multiples of 2, and we know the bag we have selected has 30 apples, write an equation to solve the number of multiples of 2 in our bag?

Answer:

The number of multiples is our unknown value, we will call the unknown value x. We know the bag has a total of 30 apples which means our equation will end with =30. We are also given that the bag is filled in MULTIPLES of 2, which indicates that our x (number of multiples) is multiplied by 2. So our equation is 2 times x = 30 Simplify the equation to state 2x = 30

Question:

Find the value of x: 2x + 3x -3 = 27

Answer:

We will use the rule of P.E.M.D.A.S to solve the equation. First we draw a line separating the two sides of the equations by drawing a vertical line under the equal sign. Since we are solving for x we need to "undo" the equation so we do P.E.M.D.A.S backward. A.S stands for add and subtract. In order to undo the -3 we must add it to both sides. This changes our equation to 2x + 3x = 30. You may also notice we have 2 values of x that can be combined simplifying the equation to be 5x = 30. Next M.D multiple and divide. 5x is the same as saying 5 times x so to undo multiplication wr miss divide 5 from both sides. The equation now reads × = 6. The final answer is ×=6
