Why did you decide to become a professional writer?
Although I majored in English as an undergrad, it was a long time before I developed the confidence to start writing. For me, it's the hardest thing in the world, but also the most fulfilling. Getting paid for it is the icing on the cake!
Subject: Film and Theater
How have movies and theater shaped your life? What are some of your favorites?
As a child, my favorite movie was "The Wizard of Oz." Although I watched it on TV every year, subconsciously the ending always bothered me. I didn’t understand why Dorothy would want to go back to Kansas after seeing everything that glorious, Technicolor Oz had to offer--wicked witches, emerald cities, flying monkeys, and all. Somehow I knew that once I left Arkansas, there would be no going back. After college, I moved to Nashville, then New York, and finally Los Angeles, where I hope to live the rest of my life. My love of film led me to UCLA in 2010, where I got my MFA in Screenwriting. Currently I'm developing a TV drama series.
Why did you major in English in college?
I've loved reading and writing since I was a child. For me, the study of English is a study of the human condition, in all of its pain and glory. My mother was an English teacher, and instilled in me a love of literature, from Shakespeare to Salinger. I've never regretted my choice.
