Define and provide an example of the term tragedy of the commons.
Tragedy of the commons is a situation in which individuals with access to a shared resource act in their own self interest and ultimately deplete the resource. One example of this is fishermen overfishing a lake.
A car starts from rest and accelerates over a time of 5.45 seconds for a distance of 110m. Determine the acceleration of the car.
Use the kinematics equation d = vi*t + 0.5*a*t^2 Time t = 5.45s and distance d = 110m are given Plug values for t and d into the equation: 110m = 0m/s*5.45s + 0.5*a*5.45^2 Solve for a: 110m = (14.85s^2)*a a = 110m/(14.85s^2) a = 7.41m/s^2
Solve for x if: 5x + 8y = 67 and 2x - y = 31
- First use the second equation to solve for y in terms of x: y = 2x - 31 - Then substitute 2x - 31 for y in the first equation: 5x + 8(2x -31) = 67 - Solve for x: 5x + 16x - 248 = 67 21x = 315 x = 15
