What is the 'cloud?'
The 'cloud' is another name for the internet. Generally the 'cloud' refers to a service that is provided from the internet. An example is email. Email is a message store and forward service that is provided by a mail server. When that mail server is somewhere in the internet and the end user uses that email serve, it is considered a 'cloud' service.

Why is World War I often considered a watershed moment in modern history?
World War I resulted in several permanent changes of a large scale. One major change was the fall of monarchies. Germany, Austria, and Russia all lost their form of government and the royal families never returned to power. The technology of warfare in World War I was different from previous wars. The modern warfare was mechanized - machine guns, tanks, airplanes, barbed wire. Previous to this, wars were fought on horseback. The level of complete warfare with hitherto unseen. The belligerent countries did not just send an army to fight a battle, but rather the entire economy and production was changed to support the war. World War I changed the world- it changed governments, it changed the way wars were fought, and it changed how countries engaged their entirety in war.
