The Middle East was largely colonised, during that time foreigners came who wanted to control the people inside their colonies. They introduced the patriarchal bargain; meaning they gave the men power over the women, in exchange they themselves (the colonizers) could control the men. Even though this colonist time period has ended, their consequences have not.

The past simple is a specific solo event that happened in the past and is now over. The past continuous consists of actions that happened in the past but for a longer period of time. Examples: Past simple = I ate an apple two days ago. Past continuous = I was crying all day.
