Does being a good writer matter in 2021?
Yes, more than ever. Reading, writing, and thinking are the best of friends. If you're a good reader, you will be a good writer. If you practice writing often, you will think about what you've written and read and it will sharpen your critical thinking skills. In a world that's bombarded with information, it is crucial that we synthesize that information and articulate what we've observed and read. By increasing our vocabulary, considering other points of view, and practice communicating our ideas, we expand our horizons and our minds!
Does literature need to be old or "a classic" in order to have merit?
In short, no. Amongst the many things that literature accomplishes, it expresses something about the human experience -- something deep within our souls that someone uniquely, creatively, and articulately described using words. The widely-held belief that literature must be "classic" in order to be considered "good" is what keeps schools from investing in student interests. The greatest priority in education should be to produce highly literate individuals, and in order to accomplish this, you must involve relevant literature in your curriculum, regardless if it's The Fault in Our Stars or Sense & Sensibility.
How does language inform our experiences as humans?
Languages, or the tools we use to communicate, enable us to turn thoughts and ideas into actions. As we learn to communicate effectively, we can understand the complexities of the human experience. Language allows us to express our differences, our similarities, our questions, and our ideas.
