Why do you believe that it is particularly critical for middle managers to possess a high EQ (emotional intelligence)?
Middle managers are interacting with people all day long. In order to be successful this role, they must be adept at managing those that report to them as well as managing up to those they report in to. Often times this can get complicated when a middle manager feels torn between the different stakeholder groups, which can feel that no matter what the action or decision, that someone is going to have to lose and the fault will lie squarely with that manager and that manager alone. In order to combat this feeling, and the fatigue that long-term exposure to this feeling can generate, middle managers must cultivate their EQ but it is also critical for upper management to be aware of these unique challenges and give middle managers the tools and support they need in order to be successful.
How can a company balance strategy and purpose and why is this important to a company's success?
Often times a company can get comfortable in their success. It is easy to get so focused on strategy that you lose sight of your purpose. And when that happens, the company risks losing market cap. It is more important for a company to stay true to its purpose while finding a way to operationalize this purpose as a strategy. Staying focused on this is critical to a company's success.
