Question:

How do the tectonics of a continental margin affect the dimensions of a continental shelf?

Inactive
Amanda E.
Answer:

Passive continental margins have relatively wide continental shelves (the largest continental shelves) and relatively thin continental lithosphere because of extension that occurs during rifting. Active margins have relatively narrow continental shelves. As an example, the California coast continental margin and shelf is relatively narrow because it is near an active transpressional transform plate boundary.

Question:

What is the difference between a stratovolcano and a shield volcano?

Inactive
Amanda E.
Answer:

A stratovolcano usually has steeper topography than a shield volcano. They are usually created from lavas of intermediate and felsic composition because these types of lavas are more viscous. Shield volcanos have lower relief. A shield volcano is usually created from lavas of mafic composition which are less viscous.
