How do I know if I have a good thesis for a paper/essay I am writing?
When constructing a paper or essay it's important for the author to establish what his or her position is for the audience. Students often make the mistake of writing a thesis statement and then include information in their essay or project that is not relative to the thesis. In short, the thesis statement is your (the author's) position on an argument or perspective. The thesis is essentially conveying what the author's belief on a subject is and the following essay is often written to defend that position.
How does a student identify the themes of a novel or piece of literature? As an example, what are some of the most prominent themes found in F. Scott Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby?
Themes are the messages the author intends the reader or audience to take away from his or her story. Often times, stories have multiple themes that revolve around the protagonist's growth and development through the obstacles he or she overcomes. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's American classic, The Great Gatsby, there are several themes that revealed to the reader such as class, wealth, entitlement, and the American Dream. But one of the often over looked themes of The Great Gatsby is the inability to let go of the past. The novel's protagonist, Jay Gatsby, is obsessed with recreating the past and is unable to accept that Daisy, the woman he loves, has moved on.
