Why is it important to use directional terms in anatomical position when describing the location of a body part?
Directional terms in anatomical position (facing forward, erected, palms facing forward), standardize vocabulary to allow universal understanding of the correct placement of the body part being reported. For example, saying "proximal" versus "above" in a mutual understood position (anatomical position), allows for a reduction of errors in communication. This is important for patient care and safety to ensure correct treatment.
