An extremely influential play that was also made into a film was Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story (1957). One huge significance was its ability to tackle social issues such as racism, gang violence and immigration by utilizing music and dance with Jazz, Latin rhythms, and big band influence. This tale inspired from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was able to be transformed to the screen with equal intensity and beauty as its stage equivalent.
