What is one thing I can do when I'm encountering writer's block?
Free write! That's something I always do when I don't know what to write. Set a timer for one minute and write (or type) until time runs out. Write whatever pops up in your mind -- ignore the urge to edit or filter whatever you write. Remember: do not stop writing! The goal is to get all your thoughts on paper. Once the minute has passed, look over what you've written to see if there are any words, phrases, or lines you can use. Keep repeating this exercise until you're ready to tackle your assignment.
Subject: College Admissions
What is an important piece of advice any high school student should know when writing a personal statement?
Put yourself in your reader's shoes as you edit your personal statement. Imagine that you are a college admissions officer. Then ask yourself: "Is this student different from other students I've read about?" "What makes this student stand out?" "Is the student's writing clear and engaging?" "Do I want to know more about this student?"
What is the difference between affect and effect?
Affect: usually a verb Effect: usually a noun When you affect something, you influence it. Example: "The amount of hours you study will affect your exam performance." An effect is a result of a cause. Example: "Playing the trumpet at midnight (cause) will drive your family crazy (effect)."
