Question:

What are some strategies to assist ESL learners in your classroom?

Answer:

One of the easiest and most beneficial things for an ESL learner is to include pictures and labels everywhere! Consider using a picture menu for lunch choices. Label the basics around the room, clock, teacher, sharpener, light, pencils, etc. Add word banks and use sentence/paragraph frames as supports for handwritten tasks. Use video or audio texts when possible. Peer pair or small group work knowing the ESL student may be more of an observer role at the beginning. More than anything, be sympathetic but continue to use academic language and normal conversation in the classroom, knowing they will need to understand content specific vocabulary.

Answer:

Think of the equation as 3 groups of 4 and draw a picture of 3 circles with 4 items in each. Repeated addition: 4 + 4 + 4 which also shows 3 groups of 4 if you draw a circle around each 4. It can also be represented by skip counting such as 4, 8, 12 Draw an array showing 3 rows of 4: X X X X X X X X X X X X

Question:

What is a brief definition of comprehension, and why is it difficult for some children?

Inactive

Answer:

Comprehension is accurately reading and processing a text to understand its meaning. Reading comprehension is like a large umbrella that holds all the other reading skills under it. Comprehension involves fundamental word call skills such as decoding, fluency, etc. It also requires understanding of vocabulary, basic text structures and organization, the ability to make inferences, understand tone, author's purpose, etc. If a student has difficulty with any of these underlying skills, their comprehension will suffer.
