Questions

Subject: Writing

Question:

What is the best way to prevent procrastination and writer's block on writing assignments?

Answer:

In my opinion, the answer to this question is simply to get started, no matter the quality or form of the writing. I use bullet-point lists to brainstorm, but slapping something down on the page is better than nothing. This may sound like simple advice, but I've seen it work for students time and time again. A blank page is intimidating, and once you have something to work with, you can build off of that. Rather than trying to get everything perfect in a first draft, students are much better served by jotting down all their ideas and proceeding from there.

Question:

What should someone who wants to learn more about psychology know before diving into the subject?

Answer:

Psychology as an academic discipline breaks itself into many sub-disciplines, including social psychology, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and more. However, anyone who wants to learn how the human mind works must recognize that not any one of these disciplines alone holds all the answers; in fact, all disciplines must be studied so a picture of the whole can be pieced together. Even then, a healthy respect for the complexity of the mind is needed. As amazing as our brains are, they are not capable of fully understanding themselves.

Subject: English as a Second Language

Question:

What makes English a uniquely difficult language to learn?

Answer:

Studying the history of the English language reveals that it has many roots. Rather than having evolved from a single language, or even the combination of two, English can be traced back to Anglo-Saxon, Norman, and Latin origins. Beyond this, the language is constantly changing and adopting new words from the cultures English speakers interact with. English is the language with the most amount of words of any language, meaning it offers a great deal of potential for expression, yet this does not make it easier to learn.
