A lot of people think that ASL started in America but it actually began in Europe, it wasn't called ASL back then, it was called sign language. ASL didn't get titled American Sign Language until later on by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. American Sign Language is not universal, just like any other language ASL has grammar and structure and is it's own language
