Subject: Writing

Question:

How can I write a paper I am proud of?

Answer:

Writing is not easy. While there is no precise formula for how to write a good paper, there are ways to approach the task in a way that will set you up for success. Many people think that to write something well, it has to be done perfectly the first time. However, becoming a better writer requires that you lean into writing as a process. The writing process entails brainstorming/pre-writing, drafting, revising, drafting, revising, drafting...etc. That is to say, the writing process is recursive. Letting go of the idea of producing a perfect paper and instead embracing the drafting and revision process can help you become a stronger writer overall.

Question:

If someone doesn't like to read or write, what strategies can they use to approach a work of literature and/or an assignment such as an essay?

Answer:

While analyzing literature and writing about it may seem daunting at first, everyone has the capacity to engage meaningfully with literature and writing. When preparing to write an essay, your future self will thank you for taking notes as you read. What do you notice? Lean into the elements and details that speak to you. If at first nothing seems to speak to you, ask yourself questions about how the work is crafted. Who is the speaker/narrator, and how does their perspective shape the story? What historical/cultural/political context is the author speaking to?
