Question:

Jose has to walk home from school; on the way home, he heads straight east and passes by a 7-11 each day to buy a slurpee. The 7-11 is located 3 miles directly east of the school. After, he heads home, which is located 4 miles directly south of the 7-11. How far is his home from his school?

In order to solve this problem, we need to be familiar with the Pythagorean Theorem- a^2 + b^2 = c^2 (in which "a", "b", and "c" represent the three sides in a right triangle, and "c" being the hypotenuse). If we sketch the path Jose takes home, we would see part of a triangle being made, with the distance from the school to 7-11 being one side (3), and the distance from the 7-11 to hi home being another side (4). We need to solve for the distance from the school to Jose's home, which forms the third side of the triangle, so we use the Pythagorean theorem and get 5 miles for our answer.

What is 25% of 200?

There are a few ways to go about solving this problem. One of the ways you can solve this is by setting up a proportion. The two fractions that we set equivalent to each other are [25/100] (which comes from the "25%" in the problem) and [x/200] (which comes from the problem as well; because it is asking for a part of 200, we set up the fraction as x, the unidentified part, of 200).
