Question:

What is the value of the tangent function?

Inactive
Megan G.

The value of the tangent of an angle theta is the slope of the line passing through the origin and the point on the unit circle (cos theta, sin theta). You can think of it was a slope of the terminal arm of angle theta in standard position.

Question:

What is the meaning of the analogy in the poem ‘The Story’ by Karen Connelly?

Megan G.

In the poem titled “The Story”, the author Karen Connelly uses an analogy. In this poem, the author compares the act of swimming in the ocean to the living of life. She is comparing the uncertainties of life to the fears and uncertainties of swimming far out into the depths of the ocean. In the beginning of the poem, the swimmer is in the ocean when they start to fear what might be lurking under the water - their fear is building up. Then, the swimmer feels as if they’ve swum out too far and fears that something is chasing after them. It turns out that it was only a floating piece of wood or something not very scary like a dolphin. The swimmer then realizes/states that no matter what it was, when one goes out swimming in the ocean, they will always have a fear of something unknown, but yet they still choose to go out swimming in the water anyway. This analogy of the swimmer out in the ocean choosing to go against their fears & swim anyway really symbolizes the overcoming of one’s fears of the uncertainties of life. This analogy develops a theme of that though life will be filled with fear and uncertainty, one must overcome their fears and take risks in order to truly live.
