Question:

What is the difference between an anticline and a syncline?

Inactive
Sage K.
Answer:

Both anticlines and synclines are formed from the large scale deformation of rocks, called folds. Folds are caused when the crust undergoes slow compression the rock responds in a ductile manner and if folds. A way to visualize this is if you and someone else pushed the ends of a rug toward each other. The rug must move because of the stress applied and will fold with small ridges and valleys. These ridges in a geological context are anticlines, and the valleys would be synclines.

Question:

How does ocean acidification occur?

Inactive
Sage K.
Answer:

Carbon dioxide ($$CO_2$$) from the atmosphere, such as from the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, gets absorbed by seawater. This process releases $$H^+$$ and decreases the pH of the ocean and subsequently acidifies it. The chemical reaction for this is described by the following equation: $$ CO_{2 aq} + H_2O ⇌ H_2 CO_3 ⇌ HCO_3 ^- + H^+ ⇌ CO_3^{2-} + 2H^+ $$ where aqueous carbon dioxide reacts with water to form, in the end, carbonate ($$ CO_3^{2-}$$) and a hydrogen ion ($$H^+$$).

Question:

What are the four major types of volcanic rocks and what are their differences?

Inactive
Sage K.
Answer:

The four major types of volcanic rocks are basalt, dacite, andesite, and rhyolite. In that order from left to right, there is increasing silica ($$SiO_2$$) content and viscosity. In that same trend, there is decreasing iron content and decreasing temperatures to which magma turns into solid rock.
