Question:

How do I multiply numbers?

Inactive
Diallo B.
Answer:

Multiplication is simply just addition, but with extra steps. You add the numbers onto eachother multiple times. So if the question is 4 x 5, you take 5 and you add 5 plus 5, four times. So 4 x 5 is the same as saying 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 which is 20. This is how multiplication works. But memorizing these multiplication facts it makes it much easier. Then you dont have to actually calculate these out every time.

Question:

How can I find the melodic inverse of different intervals?

Answer:

Two melodic intervals should be switched such that the distance from the bottom note and the top note should be inversed. So that from the bottom note, you go down an octave from that note, then you realize the interval from the new octave relation and that becomes the new interval. for example if you start with a major third (E and G#) then you put the G# on the bottom such that its G# and E. The major third beceoms a minor sixth.

Question:

What are the musicological and asthetic differences that changed in and during the transition period from the ars antiqua to the ars nova?

Answer:

During the ars nova, a notation that was more similar to our modern system was developed. This allowed for more complex rhythms than during the ars Antiqua, this rhythmic modes, which dominated the thirteenth century were much less common. Music during this time, therefore, was much more expressive, flashy, and substantive. Similarly, after the ars Antiqua, polyphony trickled down from sacred music to become an important part of secular music as well.
